What is AIFF?
AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) is Apple's uncompressed audio format, equivalent to WAV on Windows. Developed by Apple in 1988 based on Electronic Arts' IFF format, AIFF stores CD-quality audio without any compression.
AIFF is the standard format for professional audio on Mac, used in GarageBand, Logic Pro, and Final Cut Pro. The format preserves complete audio fidelity, making it ideal for editing and mastering.
Why Convert AIFF Files?
AIFF files are large—about 10MB per minute of stereo audio. Convert when you need:
- Smaller file sizes – AIFF is impractical for portable devices
- Cross-platform sharing – Windows users may prefer WAV or MP3
- Streaming upload – Platforms typically require compressed formats
- Archival compression – FLAC provides lossless compression
Convert AIFF to Other Formats
AIFF to MP3
Compress for portable devices and sharing. MP3 at 320kbps delivers quality acceptable for most listening while reducing file size by 90%.
AIFF to WAV
Convert for Windows compatibility. WAV and AIFF are both uncompressed and equivalent in quality—this is a container change, not a quality change.
AIFF to FLAC
Lossless compression reducing file size by 50-60% while preserving every bit of audio data. Perfect for archiving your AIFF collection.
AIFF to M4A
Create AAC files for iTunes and Apple devices. M4A provides excellent quality at much smaller file sizes.
Convert Other Formats to AIFF
Create AIFF files for Mac audio production:
WAV to AIFF
Convert Windows audio for Mac workflows. No quality change—both are uncompressed formats.
MP3 to AIFF
Prepare compressed audio for editing. Note: Converting MP3 to AIFF creates an uncompressed file but cannot restore quality lost in MP3 compression.
FLAC to AIFF
Decompress lossless files for Mac editing software that may not support FLAC natively.
