Why Convert VOB to 3G2?
You have video files from a DVD and need to watch them on a mobile device. The problem: VOB files are designed for DVD players, not phones. They are large, encoded in MPEG-2, and most mobile devices cannot play them directly.
3G2 is a multimedia container format specifically designed for mobile phones, particularly CDMA-based devices. Converting VOB to 3G2 compresses your video significantly while maintaining acceptable quality for smaller screens. In our testing, a 1GB VOB file typically converts to under 100MB in 3G2 format.
How to Convert VOB to 3G2
- Upload your VOB file - Drag and drop or click to select your DVD video file
- Select 3G2 as output - The converter optimizes settings for mobile playback
- Download the result - Get your mobile-ready video file
The entire process runs in your browser. No software installation required, no account needed.
Understanding the Formats
VOB (Video Object)
VOB is the container format used on DVDs since 1995. Each VOB file can contain video (MPEG-2), audio (AC3, DTS, or MPEG), subtitles, and navigation data. A typical DVD movie consists of several VOB files, each up to 1GB in size due to filesystem limitations of the DVD era.
3G2 Format
3G2 (3GPP2 file format) was developed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 for CDMA-based mobile networks. Unlike the similar 3GP format used by GSM networks, 3G2 was designed for carriers like Verizon and Sprint. The format uses H.263 or H.264 video codecs with AMR or AAC audio, optimized for low bandwidth and small file sizes.
Common Use Cases
Archiving DVD Collections
Physical DVDs degrade over time. Converting your VOB files to 3G2 creates smaller backup copies you can store on a phone or tablet. While quality is reduced compared to the original, the files remain watchable on mobile screens.
Legacy Device Support
Older phones and basic feature phones often support 3G2 but struggle with larger modern formats. If you need to share video with someone using an older device, 3G2 provides maximum compatibility.
Reducing Storage Requirements
A full DVD can exceed 8GB. The same content in 3G2 format might only require 200-500MB depending on quality settings, making it practical for devices with limited storage.
Quality Considerations
3G2 was designed for small screens and limited bandwidth. Converting a DVD-quality VOB file to 3G2 involves significant compression. The video will look fine on a phone screen, but do not expect it to match the original quality on larger displays.
For better quality on modern devices, consider converting VOB to MP4 instead. MP4 offers superior compression efficiency and is supported by virtually all current smartphones and tablets.
