What is AMR?
AMR (Adaptive Multi-Rate) is an audio format optimized for speech. Developed for mobile phone networks, AMR efficiently compresses voice at very low bitrates-as low as 4.75 kbps while remaining intelligible.
Many Android phones save voice recordings in AMR format. The format is also used in MMS messages and VoIP applications. While excellent for speech, AMR is not suitable for music.
Why Convert AMR Files?
AMR files often need conversion because:
- Limited playback support - Many media players cannot open AMR
- Quality concerns - AMR is heavily compressed for speech only
- Editing needs - Audio editors may not support AMR
- Archival purposes - MP3 or WAV are better for long-term storage
Convert AMR to Other Formats
AMR to MP3
The most common conversion. MP3 plays everywhere and preserves voice recordings in a universally compatible format.
AMR to WAV
Uncompressed audio for editing. WAV files can be imported into any audio editor for processing or transcription.
AMR to M4A
Convert for Apple devices. M4A (AAC) works seamlessly with iPhone, iPad, and iTunes.
AMR to OGG
Open-source alternative for Linux and applications using royalty-free formats.
Convert Other Formats to AMR
Create AMR files for mobile compatibility:
MP3 to AMR
Convert audio for legacy mobile devices or MMS messages. Note that AMR is speech-optimized and will degrade music quality significantly.
WAV to AMR
Compress recordings for minimum file size. Useful when bandwidth or storage is extremely limited.
