What is WebM?
WebM is an open-source video format developed by Google specifically for web use. It uses VP8, VP9, or AV1 video codecs with Vorbis or Opus audio, all royalty-free alternatives to H.264 and AAC.
Introduced in 2010, WebM was designed as a free alternative for HTML5 video. It's natively supported by Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Opera browsers without requiring any plugins.
WebM offers efficient compression and excellent quality for web streaming, though MP4 remains more universally compatible across all devices.
Why Convert WebM Files?
WebM has limitations outside web browsers:
- Mobile apps – Many apps prefer MP4 over WebM
- Apple devices – Safari and iOS have limited WebM support
- Video editing – Some editors don't handle WebM well
- TV playback – Smart TVs often don't support WebM
- Social media – Platforms work better with MP4
- Creating WebM – Convert TO WebM for web-optimized video
Convert WebM to Other Formats
Transform WebM for universal compatibility:
