What is 3G2?
3G2 (3GPP2) is a multimedia container format designed for 3G CDMA2000 mobile phones. It was developed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 (3GPP2) as a variant of the 3GP format for CDMA-based networks.
The format was widely used on older mobile phones from carriers like Verizon and Sprint in the United States. 3G2 files typically contain video encoded with H.263 or MPEG-4 and audio in AMR or AAC format.
While 3G2 was important during the early smartphone era, it has been largely replaced by MP4 and other modern formats. Converting 3G2 files ensures they can be played on current devices and platforms.
Why Convert 3G2 Files?
3G2 is a legacy format that most modern devices and software no longer support natively:
- Limited compatibility - Modern smartphones, computers, and TVs don't play 3G2 files
- No streaming support - Video platforms like YouTube don't accept 3G2 uploads
- Poor quality options - 3G2 was designed for low-bandwidth mobile, limiting quality
- Editing limitations - Video editors rarely support 3G2 format
- Archival needs - Converting to MP4 preserves old mobile videos for the future
- Sharing difficulties - Recipients can't play 3G2 files without special software
Convert 3G2 to Other Formats
Transform your legacy 3G2 videos to formats that work everywhere:
3G2 to MP4
The most recommended conversion. MP4 is the universal video format that plays on all devices, browsers, and platforms. Perfect for preserving old mobile videos.
3G2 to AVI
Convert to AVI for Windows-based editing and playback. Good for older video editing software.
3G2 to MOV
Transform to Apple's QuickTime format for editing in iMovie, Final Cut Pro, or playback on Mac/iOS devices.
3G2 to MKV
Convert to MKV for high-quality archival with support for multiple audio tracks and subtitles.
3G2 to WebM
Transform to WebM for web-optimized video that plays natively in browsers without plugins.
3G2 to MP3
Extract just the audio track from your 3G2 videos as MP3 files.
Convert Other Formats to 3G2
While rarely needed today, you can create 3G2 files for legacy device compatibility:
MP4 to 3G2
Convert modern videos for playback on older CDMA mobile phones that only support 3G2.
AVI to 3G2
Transform AVI files for legacy mobile device compatibility.
MOV to 3G2
Convert QuickTime videos for older mobile phones.
