What is VOB?
VOB (Video Object) is the container format for video on DVD-Video discs. When you look at a DVD's VIDEO_TS folder, you'll find VOB files containing the movie's video, audio, subtitles, and menu content.
VOB files use MPEG-2 video and can include multiple audio tracks (Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM) and subtitle streams. The format has been the foundation of DVD movies since the format launched in 1996.
While DVDs remain playable, converting VOB to MP4 creates digital copies for modern devices that lack DVD drives, and provides smaller, more portable files.
Why Convert VOB Files?
VOB conversion is essential for digital DVD archival:
- No DVD drives - Modern laptops and devices lack optical drives
- Large file sizes - MPEG-2 uses much more space than modern codecs
- Mobile playback - Phones and tablets can't play VOB files
- Streaming - VOB can't be streamed to TVs or Chromecast
- Preservation - DVDs degrade over time; digital copies last forever
- Portability - MP4 files can go anywhere, DVDs cannot
