3GPP2 (An extended form of MPEG-4 Part 12) |
Developer |
3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 |
Overview |
The 3G2 format is an upgraded version of .3GP file and it functions to save both audio and video files in 3G phones which are based on CDMA (Code Division multiple access). By using this format, we can transfer files over the internet and can store videos on mobile phones. It consumes less storage space when compared to the 3GP file. Therefore, it helps to save the disk space. Also, this format is very good for mobile streaming and downloading as it supports bandwidth, which is easily compatible with 3G cell phones. Moreover, this is both ISO Base media file format MPEG-4 Part 12 and MP4 file format MPEG-4 Part 14. We can use various software to open these files. For example, Apple’s free QuickTime, VLC Media player; etc. |
Technical description |
It is a parallel format of MPEG-4 Part 14 or MP4 but a simplified version, not the complex one. This is the perfect format for 3G cell phones to store videos as low bandwidth is required and besides this, it takes less space to store videos. 3GPP2 can store similar video and audio streams as of 3GP and some additional streams as well. For instance- AMR-NB, AMR-WB, AMR-WB+, AAC-LC, HE-AAC v1, and HE-AAC v2. In addition to these aforesaid streams, EVR-C, EVRC-B, EVRC-WB, VMR-WB are other extra streams used in this format. MPEG-4 media is stored in 3G2 format using MP4 and AVC file format specifications. |

Developer |
Google(Initially developed by On2, Xiph and Matroska) |
Overview |
WEBM is a multimedia container used for both audio and video formats. It is open-source and royalty-free software due to this, it can be implemented and changed for improvement by any developer. It uses different codecs to compress files. For instance, for video streams compression it uses VP8 or VP9 video codecs and for audio streams, it uses Vorbis or Opus audio codecs. It provides videos of the highest quality and that too with real-time delivery. It provides users with the playback option on any device which is due to the low computational footprint. It is licensed under BSD(A family of acceptable free software licenses). Besides this, it has another project named as Webp for images. |
Technical description |
Its structure is based on the Matroska container. That is why it can support both multiplexing and de-multiplexing. It uses core technologies like HTML, HTTP and TCP/IP which can be easily implemented and this is the main reason for its success. VP8 and VP9 are highly efficient to provide video of the highest quality. It is cost-effective due to its greater efficiency for bandwidths. It is a substitute for H.264 and MPEG4 which are patented software and have copyright. Videos of this format allow playback but it is possible only in Android version 2.3 that is Gingerbread and above. When ‘Rockchip’ came into the market in 2001 it made possible the implementation of full hardware of 1080p. Also, LiVES video editor version 1.4.9 allows coding and deflating of videos in real-time. |
