Getting a MIDI Into an Apple Library
Apple Music and the iPhone's audio apps play recorded sound, and a .mid file holds performance instructions instead, so it won't show up in a library no matter how you sync it. Converting to M4A closes the gap: FluidSynth performs the score with the FluidR3 General MIDI soundfont, the loudness is normalized by default, and the recording comes back to you as an M4A.
AAC in an MP4 Container
That's all an M4A is. AAC is the codec Apple picked for the iTunes Store in 2003, and it compresses more efficiently than MP3, so a file usually sounds as good at a smaller size. Every Apple device plays M4A natively, and so do Android, Windows, and most current players.
How the MIDI to M4A Conversion Runs
- Upload the .mid or .midi file.
- Select M4A as the output.
- Download the M4A once the server finishes the render.

Making a Ringtone Instead?
iOS accepts ringtones only as M4R, which is this same AAC audio under a different extension with a 40-second cap. If the goal is a ringing iPhone rather than a library track, go straight to MIDI to M4R and save yourself a renaming step.
