What Lossless Means When the Source Is a Score
FLAC compresses audio without discarding anything: unpack it and the recording comes back sample for sample. That guarantee applies to a recording, though, and a MIDI file doesn't contain one. It contains the score. What a MIDI to FLAC conversion preserves perfectly is our performance of that score: FluidSynth playing your file through the FluidR3 General MIDI soundfont, loudness normalized by default, stored without loss.
There's no hidden original recording a better converter could dig out. Every MIDI-to-audio tool records its own synthesizer; FLAC keeps ours intact, nothing more.
Keep the .mid File. It's the Master.
The FLAC freezes one rendering. The MIDI can still become any rendering: a future soundfont, a different synthesizer, a re-arranged version. It also costs nothing to keep, since a full song's score fits in a few kilobytes. Archive both, the FLAC as the listenable snapshot and the .mid as the source you might render again years from now.
How to Convert MIDI Into FLAC
- Upload the .mid or .midi file.
- Pick FLAC from the output list.
- Download the FLAC when the server finishes rendering.
Rendering happens server-side: the file uploads, converts there, and the FLAC comes back to your browser.
When FLAC Earns Its Size
Choose FLAC when the render is headed for an archive, a lossless music library, or an editing project that will process it further. For a phone or a share link, the extra size buys nothing you can hear; MIDI to MP3 makes a smaller file from the same render.
